This section provides information about the domain naming problems of several Universities and Research Institutions. Most of them maintain at least two different domains, decreasing significantly the visibility and impact of their contents. For methodological reasons, the web indicators are only recovered from the largest domain (sometimes even not the central one). This means an important penalty in the Ranking. Duplicate domains are a bad practice and it should be avoided.

Note 1. University of Toronto. The domain toronto.edu is used jointly with utoronto.ca

Note 2. Johns Hopkins University. The important Faculty of Medicine is under a completely different domain (hopkinsmedicine.org, not jhu.edu)

Note 3. University of Helsinki. The domain helsinki.edu is shared with the City Hall

Note 4. Imperial College. The main domain imperial.ac.uk is even smaller than the old one ic.ac.uk

Note 5. Campus de Jussieu Paris. Under the large domain jussieu.fr there are pages from Paris 6, Paris 7, CNRS and other institutions

Note 6. Kansas State University. The new domain k-state.edu is less used than the old one ksu.edu

Note 7. Universitat Zurich. Two different domains are used by this university (unizh.ch and uzh.ch)

Note 8. Universitat de Barcelona. Although the central domain is ub.edu, a large number of pages and papers are still under ub.es

Note 9. Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya. The domain upc.es is bigger than upc.edu

Note 10. University of Nottingham. A few thousands web pages are still under nott.ac.uk

Note 11. Case Western Reserve University. The domain changed recently to case.edu but there are still important pages with the old one cwru.edu

Note 12. University of Exeter. Two domains, the smaller domain is exeter.ac.uk

Note 13. Lund Institute of Technology Lund University. Being part of the Lund University, this institution maintains a completely independent web domain

Note 14. Technische Universitat Munchen. The central portal, mainly directed to students, has its own different domain (mytum.de). Most of the information is under tum.de or tu-muenchen.de

Note 15. Cardiff University. It is difficult to point out which is the main institutional domain (cardiff.ac.uk, cf.ac.uk)

Note 16. Instituto Superior Tecnico. This important Portuguese institution has no independent web domain (ist.utl.pt)

Note 17. Tecnologico de Monterrey. An international domain (itesm.edu) is now used jointly with the Mexican one (itesm.mx)

Note 18. Queen Mary University of London. Although the main web domain is qmul.ac.uk there are still many pages with qmw.ac.uk

Note 19. Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The main domain upf.edu is less commonly used tan upf.es

Note 20. University of Reading. The domain reading.ac.uk still accounts for a significant fraction of the total number of web pages

Note 21. Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications. Two domains refer to the same institution (telecom-paris.fr and enst.fr)

Note 22. Johannes Kepler Universitat Linz. It is not possible to choose the main domain between jku.at and uni-linz.ac.at

Note 23. Wageningen University & Research Centre. The Dutch domain wageningenuniversiteit.nl refers to contents also named under wur.nl & wau.nl

Note 24. Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon. The new .eu domain is used by the main web site but most of the pages are still under ens-lyon.fr domain

Note 25. State University of New York. All SUNY colleges have their own independent domains

Note 26. University of Bradford. Both domains (brad.ac.uk & Bradford.ac.uk) are commonly used for this organization

Note 27. Saint Petersburg State University. A lot of websites still use the old domain (pu.ru) instead the new one (spbu.ru)

Note 28. Universite Paris 6 Pierre and Marie Curie. Many departments and research groups have not adopted yet the domain upmc.fr

Note 29. Universitat de Girona. Two main domains are used (udg.es & udg.edu) for their web sites

Note 30. Universita Degli Studi Di Trieste. Two different web domains are used (units.it, univ.trieste.it)

Note 31. Sabanci University. Apparently sabanciuniv.edu and sabanciuniv.edu.tr give access to the same web contents

Note 32. Hochschule Furtwangen. Fh-furtwangen.de or hs-furtwangen.de

Note 33. Western Connecticut State University. Duplicate access: wcsu.edu or westconn.edu

Note 34. Universita Politecnica delle Marche. A small number of pages are still under the domain unian.it

Note 35. Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Campinas. Pages from this university can be recovered from these domains puccamp.br and puc-campinas.edu.br

Note 36. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Several Indian universities are using indistinctly ernet.in and ac.in in their URL addresses

Note 37. Universite du Quebec Abitibi-Temiscamingue. One web domain is independent (uquat.ca), the other is not (uquat.uqebec.ca)

Note 38. Universidade de Passo Fundo. Several small Brazilian Universities use two domains, probably for commercial reasons. This one ranked in the Top 400 is an example (upf.br, upf.tche.br)

Note 39. Izmir Institute of Technology. Iyte.edu.tr & iztech.edu.tr

Note 40. Pedagogical University of Cracow. The two involved addresses are ap.krakow.pl and wsp.krakow.pl

Note 41. Universite de La Mediterranee Aix Marseille II. A very complex situation, with a main domain (univmed.fr), but other two still frequently used (mediterranee.univ-mrs.fr, univ-aix.fr)

Note 42. Lansing Community College. One of the largest US Community College uses two different domains: lansing.cc.mi.us, lcc.edu

Note 43. Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation. There are two web domains involved: aanet.ru and guap.ru

Note 44. Deutsche Hochschule fur Verwaltungswissenschaften Speyer. hfv-speyer.de or dhv-speyer.de

Note 45. Algoma University College. This Canadian institution publishes pages in two domains algomau.ca & auc.ca

Note 46. Universita degli Studi di Napoli Parthenope. The two domains have different size but still used by several servers (uninav.it,uniparthenope.it)

Note 47. Islamic University of Gaza. Iugaza.edu & iugaza.edu.ps

Note 48. Centre National de La Recherche Scientifique. A large number of research groups and teams of the CNRS are under university web domains

Note 49. Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas. A few , but very relevant centers are under domains different to csic.es

Note 50. Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Central organization uses avcr.cz, the rest of institutes maintains the old cas.cz

Note 51. Ioffe Institute. Two options available: ioffe.rssi.ru or ioffe.ru
